Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, the premier government college of Odisha has added another feather in its cap by hosting the State’s largest Civil Engineering fest. Aptly named Sthapna, the fest laid a concrete foundation for the civil engineering students of Odisha to showcase their dexterity. As many as 436 students from 11 Institutes across the state had registered for the 2 day event. “We are enthralled to see such a huge turnout despite the scorching heat”- Mr. Anil Pradhan, Co-ordinator, Sthapna’16 was quoted as saying.
The first day of the fest, i.e., April 2, 2016, started with a talk by Scientist A.K. Rath, former Scientist, ISRO on the topic “Mission on Mars” & consisted of fun filled events like BRIDGART & DEXTERITY. The objective of BRIDGART was to construct the strongest truss bridge using standard sticks provided. In DEXTERITY, teams consisting of a maximum of 2 members had to make a creative and intricate 2D model of a structure of given dimensions in AutoCAD within a time limit of 2 hours.
The second day kept the adrenaline rushing, thanks to CIVIOTIX and VELLUM MANIFESTO. CIVIOTIX consisted of building a manually controlled hydraulic robot capable of picking up blocks & placing it in the finish zone without traversing it. On the other hand, VELLUM MANIFESTO included 10 shortlisted teams from various colleges who put forth their ideas and research in the form of Powerpoint presentations.
The panel of judges consisted of eminent professors like Prof. Dr. A.N. Nayak, Prof. Dr. P.K. Pradhan, Prof. Dr. C.R. Mohanty. There was provision for high tea and snacks in the midst of events. An opulent lunch was served on the second day which was a culinary delight. Credit must be given to the Tech head, Mr. Satyam Kumar, Management Head, P. Rajitha & the students of VSSUT who co-ordinated the blitzkrieg event with such panache. The Department of Civil Engineering, VSSUT, was conducive in the magnum opus, contributing with a monetary budget & supportive in making Sthapna the talk of the town.
