Matrubhasa Diwas 2020

The cultural association of the University organised “Matrubhasa Diwas” on 20th February, corresponding to “International Mother Language Day”, annually celebrated on 21st February. The origin story goes back to Feb 21, 2000, when UNESCO declared this day following the violence against a silent protest organised at the University of Dhaka.

The event was conducted in the Biju Pattnaik E-Learning Centre with the gracious presence of Chief Guests Sadhucharan Panda and Bijaykrushna Tripathy. The Chief Guests were accompanied by The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Atal Chaudhury Sir, TEQIP Coordinator, Dr. PK Hota Sir along with Faculty Coordinator Er. Sarmila Garnaik. The event was hosted by the Coordinator of Literary Society, Atul Saswat.

The event started at around 3 pm. After the inauguration, the Chief Guests blessed the stage by shedding light upon various aspects of our mother tongue. Dr. Bijaykrushna Tripathy had an amazing talk on colloquialism, regional variation and the ambiguities regarding the purity of the mother tongue. Following that, the Vice Chancellor had his share of the stage and expressed his fondness for his mother language. It was a great joy watching the Vice-Chancellor speaking in his own native language, Bengali. Shortly, an interactive session was held. They made the event further illustrious by a classical dance performance.

The centre of attraction of the event were the competitions where students from all disciplines in the University participated. The competitions were conducted by the Coordinators of Literary Society and Quizzine, Atul Saswat and Som Nath, respectively. The first one was a Literary quiz in which students took part in groups. It was followed by Elocution Competition where students were judged based on their verbal charisma, content, grammar and linguistic proficiency.
