Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person – the gift of life. Blood donation is the act of selfless service by a donor to save recipient’s life. It is the true reflection of humanism and is a vital part in the life saving process. One donation can save the life of up to three people. To make people aware towards the blood donation, a variety of events, awareness programs, camps and supplementary promotional activities are organized in all states.
The SSG (Social Service Guild) Society, VSSUT Burla, in collaboration with Red Cross, Burla Sanskar Kendra, VIMSAR Burla, Sambalpur university, Burla Lion’s club and MCL organized a blood donation camp within the university premises on 17th of March 2019. The hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the university Prof Dr. Atal Chaudhuri inaugurated the camp by the auspicious lamp lighting ceremony to spread a divine grace. The Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Atal Chaudhuri and Dean Student’s Welfare Prof Sudhanshu Sekhar Das actively participated in the camp and encouraged the students for voluntary blood donation. They also expressed their gratitude to the SSG society for conducting such a charitable camp and its continuous endeavor in this regard. They also stressed on the growing need of blood in the state and commended the young volunteers for their noble act.
Adults whose age is more than 17 years with a minimum weight of 45 kg were only eligible for donating blood. Medical professionals and expert nurses from VIMSAR were present for smooth functioning of the event. A lot of people came forward to donate the blood which included students, professors and non-teaching staff. The camp went on for the entire day from 8 in the morning till evening and a sum total of 562 units of blood was collected which was much more than the expected number. The blood donors were provided with refreshment in order to re-energize themselves in addition to that they were also provided with a certificate of appreciation to encourage them for further participation.
The students’ coordinator Harichandan Mohanty and Prajna Prakash under the guidance of Vice President of SSG society, Dr Priyaranjan Mohapatra organized and guided the whole camp. The camp ended with a successful number of donors and active participation of the staff and students. The Camp was successfully accomplished with everyone’s support. Human blood is an essential component of human life which is universally recognized as the most precious element that sustains life and there are no substitutes to blood as yet. Among professors Dr Asohk Kumar Sahoo also contributed to the cause.
A blood transfusion saves millions of lives each year, but adequate and safe blood supply is a demanding challenge in developing countries like India. There is a shortage to active blood donors to meet the need of increased blood demand Hence, we all must take active participation in such events which serves for a noble cause.
