The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, VSSUT Burla hosted its annual branch fiesta, DRAVYA on the 25th and 26th of March 2018 in the University premises. DRAVYA, a term which literally translates into ‘substance’ in ancient Jain philosophy, turned out to be a successful and memorable gala as an outcome of the combined efforts put in by all the students of the department from sophomores to the final years. The two-day fest kicked off on the dawn of March 25 (Sunday) with the customary inauguration ceremony, presided over by the hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof B.B Pati as the Chief Guest of the auspicious occasion alongside the General Manager of Aditya Aluminium, Mr. Jagdish Patra as the Guest of Honour. The Head of the Department, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Dr Sushant Kumar Badjena and the Faculty Advisor, Mr Gautam Behera, were also among the dignitaries who graced the ceremony with their presence on the stage. The traditional lighting of lamp followed by speeches ventilated by the big guns wrapped up the inauguration ceremony and paved the way for some exciting events.
There was a lot of technical and fun events lined up completely during this mega fest. After the inauguration ceremony, numerous intriguing events took place, like Carta: a paper presentation event that allowed the students to express their ideas, innovations and theoretical conjectures on the various genres of research and technology in the field of Metallurgy. The poster presentation event, MetaCanvas saw the participation of many enthusiastic students who conveyed their brilliant thoughts through aesthetic and colourful posters. Quiz events like Metal-o-Freak: the Metallurgy quiz and Quriosity: the general quiz, were organised to provide students with a boost of knowledge tagged along with exciting cash prizes. Graphico: a unique event based on ‘metallography’ provided the platform to analyze, summarize and visualize a material by going through its microstructures. It involved a series of manual work load like grinding, polishing and etching to prepare the required sample for predicting a specific material.
The second day of the fest commenced with another interesting event, Modelling: a competition that involved model making to understand how a lot of metallurgical mechanisms operate using practical proofs. In the Industrial Problem Solving competition, the participants were judged on the basis of how efficiently and immediately they could come up with ideas and solutions to some of the industrial problems. For the gaming freaks, there was a lot of awesome gaming events like ‘FIFA’, ‘Mini Militia’ and ‘Ludo’. Some of the fun events also included Spell Bee and Scavenger Hunt, but the main attraction of the evening was a special event, called the Meta-Talent Hunt. This event witnessed some amazing dance performances and mellifluous musical numbers that left the audience spellbound. The entire aura of the fest boomed ecstatically with high energy performances by the immensely talented students and rocking beats of the DJ. This grand fiesta witnessed 51 participants from other colleges including UGIE Rourkela, OPJU Raigarh and GCE Keonjhar. All the winners of respective events were awarded with cash prizes during the prize distribution ceremony. Shortly afterwards, a delicious dinner was also served on the second day of the grand fest, DRAVYA that left the students happily contented after such an amusement-filled span of two days.
This two day branch fiesta filled with fun, excitement and knowledge concluded on the night of March 26. DRAVYA 2018 turned out to be a highly successful and glorious episode for the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department.
