Illumina 2k16: Let’s be a Sport

The two day long annual sports meet “ILLUMINA 2k16” held on 22nd-23rd of January was an athletic extravaganza for all the sports enthusiasts around the campus. The turnout was larger than expected as a hoard of spirited VSSUTians showed up on day one. The opening ceremony was presided upon by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. E. Saibaba Reddy. The chief guest of the closing ceremony was, national level football player, Mr. Bachan Singh Bahadur. Apart from the track events, field and mega events such as Javelin throw, putting the shot, hammer throw, kho-kho, and kabaddi provided the on-campus athletes an opportunity to show off their skills. Fun events like three-legged race were also organized. T.I.M.E. institute took a noble initiative by donating books, which were given away as prizes to all the Sanskar Kendra participants in a specially organized sack race and three-legged race. It sure brought a smile on their face. Many university records were smashed by our students, such as the 5000m and 1500m track event record, both by Debasis Lenka and the Javelin Throw record by Chinmay Jena. Kho-Kho, Kabaddi and Tug-of-War, the mega events, were all dominated and conquered by our final year students. Upasna Samataray was declared as the champion among girls and Chinmay Jena became the champion among the boys. The torch, which was lit throughout the meet, was brought from the Burla temple by our students. It burned throughout the two days of the meet and was extinguished after the flag down and slow march, at the end of the closing ceremony. Hurdles were not only on the track, but also on the organizing committee’s course of plans. There were many injuries, some really severe ones as well. This clearly showed the intensity of the competition and the dedication of the participants. Luckily, the ambulance was on standby on the field 24/7. It ferried them to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. Interestingly, the real test for the organizing committee was on the morning of the opening ceremony. At around 5 am, a pipeline burst open spilling water all over the track and turning it into mush. Few of them managed to repair the swamped track carrying sand and soil from the nearby area and made it look like nothing happened. Hats off to the dedication of the team and the crowd for making Illumina 2k16 a grand success.
